Film Screening: Cruella (2021)

About the Event

At the height of the punk rock revolution in mid-1970s London, young grifter Estella (Emma Stone) transforms herself into the fabulously vicious Cruella (2021, rated PG-13) – de Vil that is, in this origin story for the glamorous villainess of One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Estella is a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her fashion designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they make their way on the London streets. One day, Estella's two-tone hair and sassy style catch the eye of Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), a fashion legend who is wealthy and devastatingly chic. Their relationship sets off a chain of events that drive Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella. Disney claims this as their foray into queer culture, with an openly gay character (Estella’s cross-dressing friend Artie) as well as Cruella’s own drag fantasy look and family-bashing venom – an interesting turn for the famously old-fashioned entertainment juggernaut.
