The Los Angeles Public Library celebrates community, culture, and storytelling at the Fourth Annual June Jubilee, a free, family-friendly event featuring inspiring speakers, live entertainment, hands-on arts and crafts, and workshops on health, genealogy, technology, and more.
Arrive early for an African-inspired Opening Ceremony and water-libation blessing honoring ancestors and community, accompanied by vibrant dancers and drummers who welcome guests with spirit, joy, and cultural pride.
New this year, attendees are invited to participate in CommUnity Archives interviews—an opportunity to share personal stories, preserve family legacies, and record oral histories of life and experience in Los Angeles.
This event is free and open to all, so bring your friends and family along for a day of celebration and learning!

Embark on a fun-filled Scavenger Hunt Adventure at June Jubilee! Grab your scavenger hunt card at any information table on 5th St. or Flower St., explore the iconic Central Library, and get your passport stamped at each location. Return your completed passport for a prize at the Auditorium lobby.
Quilt Display - Afro American Quilters of Los Angeles
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: 2nd Floor - Rotunda
African American quilts are an expressive art form that gives voice to both the past and the present. The Afro-American Quilters of Los Angeles (AAQLA) will display their distinctive quilts, demonstrating quilting's rich cultural heritage.
Marcus Miller's Drums
Time: 11 a.m. - 12 noon
Location: Flower Street Entrance - Maguire Gardens
An interactive drum workshop which focuses on the importance of drums in our society, past and present. Participants are given the opportunity to express themselves on a percussive instrument. The goal is to get total group interaction and stimulate (non-verbal) communication so that we learn more about each other and our cultures through the experience of drumming.
Mind, Body, and Soul Revival

Mind, Body, and Soul Revival- Explore ways to nurture your whole self and create a health and wellness plan that fits your unique needs. Learn to use exercise, stress management, sleep, and diet to improve and manage your mental and physical well-being and keep your spirit lifted.
Sunshine Storyteller: Her Traveling Shoes

Ina Buckner Barnette, the Sunshine Storyteller, will share true stories of courageous Black women who spoke up and traveled for love, adventure, fame, and fortune. Intended for ages 5-12.
Home Buyer Workshop

Location: 1st Floor - Singleton Adult Literacy Center (ERTC)
Don’t miss the opportunity to start making strides toward purchasing your very own home. Experts have gathered to educate attendees on upfront costs, budgeting, and the impact a credit score can have on a loan. There will be a Q&A portion of the workshop, and of course, you can ask your pressing questions. Remember, homeownership can be for everyone, and that includes you.

Founders Courtney Tell & Sharalle Horn created Melanated Jump Squad, a South Central Los Angeles-based Double Dutch squad, as an outlet for communities to channel their inner youth through fun and family, promoting mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Afrofuturist Ancestor Masks
Time: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Location: Lower Level 2 - Octavia Lab
Join LA Commons in creating Afrofuturist Masks to uplift the rich visionary heritage of Octavia E. Butler. Participants will draw from seeds, plants, traditional Adinkra symbols, and futuristic components to create unique masks and fans that bridge the past, present, and future.
Per-Zine Workshop
Time: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Location: Lower Level 2 Atrium - Outside Landing, opposite of the Octavia Lab
Come explore the genre of perzine (short for personal zine), where creators use zines to share individual experiences, feelings, and thoughts. Similar to the literary genres of autobiography and memoir, but often crossed with the kind of reflection found in a diary or journal entry, perzines can include many forms of creative expression, such as collage, illustration, poetry, and more! This workshop will start with a brief exploration of examples of perzines from the Library's zine collection. Participants have the opportunity to donate their finished zine to Special Collections.
Filling in the Blanks: Rolland J. Curtis
Time: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Location: Lower Level 4 Atrium - History & Geneology Dept
Come take a look at some of these images and see if you can help fill in the blanks. Rolland J. Curtis served as a Field Deputy for Council Members Tom Bradley and Billy Mills in the 1960s, which gave him unique access to photograph the Black communities of Los Angeles in the 1960s and the early 1970s. His prolific image archive of this time and place resides at the Los Angeles Public Library. Staff and volunteers have identified many people in Curtis' photographs, but many remain a mystery.
CommUnity Archives Testimonials

CommUnity invites Angelenos to share personal stories, preserve family legacies, and record testimonials of life in Los Angeles. Through one-on-one storytelling sessions with a community archivist, participants will have the opportunity to share and preserve their stories while contributing to a growing community archive. What stories, memories, and experiences do you want to preserve for future generations?

AfroCentric Style: A Celebration of Blackness & Identity in Pop Culture. Book presentation and discussion with Q & A.
Shirley Neal is an author, journalist, TV/Film producer, and pop culture enthusiast whose work has focused on pop culture, Africa, and Black identity. The Emmy Award-winner has produced hundreds of hours of television programming and documentaries, and has served as a contributing writer for Ebony, Forbes Africa, and MovieMaker magazines, among others. The three-time NAACP Image Award nominee recently received the 2025 Distinguished Award from the Ventura County, California, Branch of the NAACP for her work as a writer, producer, and community servant. Her next book, a friends-to-lovers novel, is inspired by her journey as a living kidney donor to her husband.

Create your own hand‑held fan rooted in Black cultural tradition. Using collage, affirmations, and your own creativity, you'll design a fan that celebrates your inner child and honors the resilience of our ancestors. All materials provided. No art experience needed—just come play.
Face Painting

Sparking Imagination Through Art! Join artist Marquita Jordan for this 3-hour-long face painting program. Marquita is an excellent artist and knows that every child loves to dress up and pretend play.
Hip-Hop and R&B Bingo

Think you know your R&B and Hip Hop? Prove it! Join us for R&B/Hip Hop Bingo—a fun, music-filled game where your knowledge of classic and current hits could win you a special prize! Bring your friends, vibe to the beats, and test your music memory.
Nickelodeon Artist Event & Craft Activity

Bring your imagination to Nickelodeon for a hands -on workshop where kids can customize tote bags with the help of professional studio artists. Young creators can get their favorite characters custom-sketched directly onto their bags.

Out of the Dust: Folktales and Life Stories With Ina Buckner-Barnette
Time: 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Location: 3rd Floor - Reading Room
Join us in the Literature and Fiction Department to learn the story of the Grandmother of Juneteenth. Marvel at Ina Buckner-Barnette's family story of being among the pioneers who built the oldest living Black–owned town west of the Mississippi—Nicodemus, KS. Experience an uplifting telling of Nelson Mandela's favorite African folktale, The Enchanting Song of the Magical Bird, a story about the power of hope and innocence.
With rhythmic accompaniment by the audience, using egg shakers, an Afro-Latino instrument popularised in Samba and harkening back to the musical ways brought by enslaved Africans to the Americas, the stories are woven together in Ms. Buckner-Barnette's unique and lauded style.

Got Rhythm!

Got Rhythm! is a captivating dance and music performance based on the indigenous American art form of rhythm tap dance. Channing Cook-Holmes is a tap dancer and drummer extraordinaire who presents rhythm tap in its purest form with live instrumentation. It is a contemporary look at the origins of tap dance and its masters, featuring drums, bass, and keyboards. Channing, along with the ensemble, interacts with and engages the audience in rhythm making, encouraging each person to discover the tap dancer or musician inside.
Family Storytime

Join Monica Rue as she does a short presentation on her experiences as a craft small business owner. The presentation will be followed by a craft workshop.
June Jubilee Bracelet Making
Time: 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: 2nd Floor - Teen'Scape
Celebrate Black excellence through creativity, self-expression, and community. Create a bracelet that's uniquely yours by mixing colorful beads, adding charms, and designing something that reflects your personality, experiences, and style. Leave with a wearable reminder of the stories, creativity, and community that make this celebration special.
Yoga/Flow With Fana
Time: 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: Flower Street Entrance - Maguire Gardens
The class will be a beginner- and family-friendly 50-minute yoga flow, designed to uplift the spirit and strengthen the body through different yoga postures.
Please bring a yoga mat (a limited number will be provided). Feel free to practice the entire Vinyasa flow, or just join us to pause and breathe together!
