LA Made: History of Mexican Rebozos
About the Event
Explore the History of Rebozos, which looks like a cross between a scarf and a shawl; an important item for women in Mexico and around the world, making a distinct cultural statement. The presentation will include an exhibit of rare and beautiful rebozos, a fashion show, and a demonstration of how to wear this multi-use garment in many ways.
The audience will learn a brief history review, from rebozos of Prehispanic times up to the present, and how, over the centuries, this multi-use textile has evolved into a complicated collection of shapes and patterns. The influences on this iconographic item are significant; during the Mexican Revolution, it represented a journey through life from birth to death and indeed had a profound influence on the arts.
