Introduction to Directing: "Same Scene, Different Director"

About the Event

How does a director help the audience understand the story? In collaboration with the California Student Media Festival, Westwood Library will host professional filmmakers to share their expertise in creating media art. This workshop will be held in Westwood's upstairs balcony area for participants aged 11-18. In this hands-on workshop, students direct the same simple scene in different ways to discover how choices in blocking, camera placement, performance, and pacing change the meaning.
Students will:
  • Understand that a director makes choices about actors, camera, movement, and emotion. Practice giving clear, kind, useful directions.
  • Create two different versions of the same short scene.
  • Notice how directing choices change the audience’s understanding.

Reserve your spot by signing up at the Westwood Branch Reference Desk or emailing wwood@lapl.org. Spaces are limited.

For disability-related accommodations, please call (213) 228-7430 at least five business days prior to the event.
